How To Tie A Bow Tie

Increase your gentleman knowledge with this helpful tutorial.

Learning how to tie a bow tie is an important skill for a gentleman. Many well-known people from Dhani Jones to Indiana Jones have donned this famous sophisticated accent. Wearing a bow tie shows confidence and class that makes you a gentleman tour de force.

Correctly tying and wearing a bow tie is a must. A gentleman should never rely on a pre-tied or clip-on for any reason. Self-tying your bow tie adds personal character to any outfit, just be sure not make it too large or too loose or the outcome will be disastrous.

Tying your own bow tie is not only cool ability but puts you into the class of sartorial greatness.

STEP 1: ADJUST YOUR TIE TO THE CORRECT SIZE BEFORE YOU START. FLIP UP YOUR SHIRT COLLAR & DRAPE THE TIE AROUND YOUR NECK SO THAT THE ONE SIDE HANGS SLIGHTLY LONGER THAN THE OTHER SIDE.

STEP 2: CROSS THE LONGER SIDE OVER THE SHORTER.

STEP 3: MAKE SURE YOU ARE CROSSING THE THIN SECTIONS THAT MAKE THE NECK STRAP AND NOT THE WIDER PART THAT WILL BE THE BOW.

STEP 4: TAKE THE LOWER END, FOLD IT TO THE MIDDLE OF THE TIE AND PLACE THE LONGER END OF THE TIE OVER LOWER END.

STEP 5: FOLD THE LOWER END THAT FORMS THE BOW SO THAT IT CREATES A LOOP.

STEP 6: TAKE THE LONGER END AND PASS IT THROUGH THE LOOP YOU HAVE MADE. PUSH THE FOLDED LONGER END FAR ENOUGH THROUGH TO STAY IN PLACE.

STEP 7: HOLD THE BOW AT BOTH FOLDED ENDS AND PULL CAREFULLY SO THAT THE KNOT ON THE BOW TIGHTENS.

STEP 8: ADJUST AS NEEDED UNTIL IT IS TIED COMFORTABLY AND FIRMLY. THE BOW SHOULD BE EVEN AND NEAT.
